Sharavati River

Sharavati River needs no formal introduction. It is a famous tourist attraction in the Indian state of Karnataka and the origination of the spectacular jog falls. Originating from Ambuteertha, this river flows through the entire state of Karnataka and is a major part of the river basins that flow on the western side of the country. According to a legend, this river emerged when Lord Ram shot an arrow on earth to quench the thirst of Devi Sita. This event gave the name Sharavati to this river as ‘shar’ means ‘arrow’ in Sanskrit.

It Is Known For:-
1)    Sharavati River is the prominent tourist site and the longest river that flows through the state of Karnataka.

2)    The well-known Jog Fall aka ‘Niagara Falls of India’ originates from this river.

3)    The river also has two dams constructed over it. They are known by the names of Linganamakki and Gerusoppa respectively.

4)    These dams are multipurpose dams and are constructed to serve the purpose of generating the hydroelectricity.

5)    Sharavati River is a navigable water body and the activity of boating can be enjoyed in it.

However, the apt time to make the trip unforgettable is between October-March as the weather is pleasant enough for rowing the oars of the boat during the daytime.
