History of Wayanad Heritage museum:
Wayanad is rich in anthropological and archaeological places and Edakkal caves are one major of them. Various research works and preservation attempts are carried on from the year 1980 by the researchers and scientists of Kerala. The anthropologists got success in collecting a number of artefacts from this city, especially from the areas of Sultan Bathery, Wayland forests, and Ambalavayal. All such attempts gathered the maximum interest of the anthropologists and authorities of the district and hence they decided to escalate the mission of digging more archaeological artefacts.
As a result of that, a number of unique relics got extracted from Edathara, Nalluvayal, Muthanga, etc. places. The mission took a broaden structure with the participation of students of numerous popular colleges and universities including Calicut University. More relics were unearthed from several places of Malabar. Now, the district authorities felt the need for an efficient way of preserving those relics. They took the help of the department of state archaeology and finally the Wayanad Heritage museum Wayanad was formed.

Wayanad Heritage Museum is a well-maintained heritage hall of Kerala. It hosts countless artefacts that prove the existence of an unconventional civilization in the Wayanad Mountains and shows a piece of substantial evidence in this prospect.
This heritage museum has numerous distinct exhibits including stone carvings, stone-made weapons, 14-16th century’s sculptures, megalithic age’s potteries, hunting tools, sculptures of clay and various important artefacts. • It is four blocks to preserve the exhibits, which are Jeevanasmruthi, Devasmruthi, Gotharasmruthi, and Veerasmruthi.
• Jeevansmruthi and Gothrasmruthi are the two sections where tribal articles are preserved. Various kinds of tribal artefacts including jewellery, headgear, weapons for fishing and hunting, musical and farming instruments, cowbells are kept here.
• Devasmruthi exhibits artefacts that allure most of the students and scholars of archaeology. The collection includes ancient ages’ artefacts including the stone idols of the 12th century, native artworks buried into the Malabar region and terracotta statuettes.
• Veerasmruthi collects several types of graphic rock edicts which are popularly known as Hero stones. These speak for the valiant warriors who remained in the bygone era.
