Nalanda University

Nalanda University is a well-known tourist attraction in the Indian state of Bihar. Founded in the 5th century, it is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was founded by Shakraditya during the reign of the Gupta dynasty. Many scholars from different nations have been associated with this university. Xuan Zang, a Chinese traveler and scholar mentioned about Nalanda University in his texts. As per his travelogue, there were about 2,000 teachers and 10,000 students in the Nalanda University during his visit.

Why Is It Famous?
Nalanda University is famous because it is one of the oldest universities in the world and is located in Bihar. This university served as a ‘Mahavihara’ or a Buddhist Monastery in the ancient times. It was shut down after being attacked by the army of the Turkish Invader, Bakhtiyar Khilji. The treasury was looted by the army and the whole university was set on fire. It remained shut for many centuries. After a span of 800 years, it was again re-opened for the higher studies. It became possible after the efforts of the state government.

No visitor/tourist is permitted to enter the university campus without a valid identity proof. Thus, it is important to carry the identity card during each visit. Nalanda Memorial Hall, Xuan Zang Memorial Hall, and Nalanda Multimedia Museum etc. are some must-see places here.
