Along the western coast of Sri Lanka, some of the most exotic beaches are offered by Negombo. The city’s shoreline is fairly long and well-maintained. Some parts of it under the maintenance of private hotels are quieter, while the public beach area is more abuzz with native people as well as tourists. At the Negombo Beach, you can spot many fishermen throughout the day, busy working with their equipment and catering to the large fishing industry of the city. You would also be able to spot a shipwreck, approximately 50 years old, which serves as an artificial coral reef for fishes.
Negombo Beach has something for all. It is easy to find a secluded spot on the golden sand for resting and sun bathing. Or you can take on the waters with some fun and adventurous sports like diving. It is easy to rent diving gear and the classes are also reasonable for it. A Beach Park, known as Mora Wala is another interesting place for beach activity lovers. A small fee has to be paid at the entry. This spot is much preferred by the locals for an evening hangout, especially by young couples. Vendors and fortune tellers add on to the buzz at the beach park.
