This tomb was erected by Nur Jahan- one of the Mughal empresses, in memory of her father Ghiasud-Din-Beg between 1622-1628 A.D. After Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, this mausoleum is the most important monument in Agra. This tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is considered as the imminent precursor of the Taj Mahal.
It was the first Mughal structure totally constructed of marble and the first to make extensive use of pietra dura, inlay work of marble. The mausoleum is small and squat compared to the soaring Taj, but then it attracts more visitors. There are extremely fine marble latticework passages admitting light to the interior. The workmanship is extremely fine and many ardent admirers feel it is as beautiful as the Taj.
