It is often referred to as the gateway to the Punakha valley and is a popular stop for travelers journeying between Bhutan’s two main towns, Thimphu and Punakha.

Dochula Pass is easily accessible by road and is located about 30 kilometers from Thimphu and 20 kilometers from Punakha. Visitors can reach the pass via a private car or taxi, or as part of a guided tour. Most visitors make a stop here while traveling from Thimphu to Punakha or vice versa. The drive will take you up to the pass, where you can stop to enjoy the views and take in the tranquil atmosphere. The roads are well-paved and generally safe, though the weather conditions can sometimes affect travel during the winter months.

I visited Bhutan last March and loved every moment: Thimphu’s calm energy, Majestic Punakha Dzong by the rivers were unforgettable. The guides were kind, punctual, and full of insight, and the hotels were cozy with great views. The drives over Dochu La were smooth and scenic but difficult with curves. A beautifully organized trip—highly recommended! ...more

“Our family trip to Bhutan with Lotus Path Adventures was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, everything was perfectly organized — the visa, transport, hotels, and even the little details like special meals for our children. Our guide was warm, knowledgeable, and patient, making sure we experienced Bhutan at a comfortable pace while still covering the highlights like Tiger’s Nest, Punakha Dzong, and Buddha Dordenma. We especially appreciated how the team customized the itinerary for us, balancing sightseeing with relaxation, and adding fun activities like short hikes and cultural interactions. The care, professionalism, and genuine hospitality made us feel less like tourists and more like honored guests. Bhutan’s beauty and serenity touched us deeply, and Lotus Path Adventures made the whole journey seamless and meaningful. We will cherish these memories forever and highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Bhutan!” ...more
