Usambara Mountains Overview

The Usambara Mountains, located in the northeastern region of Tanzania, are one of the country’s most captivating natural wonders. Spanning an area of about 16,000 square kilometers, this stunning mountain range is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains. It is renowned for its lush landscapes, unique biodiversity, and the opportunity to explore both nature and local culture. The Usambara Mountains are also famous for offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, attracting nature lovers, trekkers, and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

How to Reach Usambara Mountains, Arusha

The Usambara Mountains are situated about 300 kilometers northeast of Arusha. While they are not as accessible as some other destinations in Tanzania, they can be reached through several transportation options:

  • Private Car or Taxi: If you are traveling from Arusha, the most comfortable and convenient option is to hire a private car or taxi. The journey can take around 5 to 7 hours, depending on the route and road conditions. The trip provides an opportunity to enjoy the scenic landscapes of Tanzania.
  • Public Transport: There are buses and shared taxis (daladalas) that run from Arusha to towns near the Usambara Mountains, like Lushoto or Mombo. However, public transport can be less reliable and may take longer due to the mountainous terrain.
  • Guided Tours: Many tour operators in Arusha offer guided tours to the Usambara Mountains, which may include transportation, a guide, and visits to local attractions. This is a great option for those who want to explore the area with an experienced guide.

Weather and Best Time to Visit Usambara Mountains

The weather in the Usambara Mountains is characterized by a tropical climate, with cooler temperatures compared to the surrounding lowlands. The mountains offer a refreshing respite from the heat of the plains. The climate varies depending on the altitude, with lower areas being warmer and higher areas offering cooler temperatures year-round.

The best time to visit the Usambara Mountains is during the dry season, from June to October. During this period, the weather is mild, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies, making it perfect for trekking and outdoor activities. The rainy season, from March to May, can make some trails difficult to navigate, and the roads may be muddy and slippery. Therefore, it's advisable to avoid visiting during the heavy rains.

Just reach out to Elisha and ask him to advise! We arrived in Tanzania for a one week honeymoon safari filled with excitement and smooth organization from the start. At the airport, we were warmly welcomed by a driver holding our names, which made everything feel personal and well arranged. Elisha from Trip Genius Advisory planned the entire trip carefully and stayed in touch throughout, always checking on us. We started in Tarangire, where we saw many elephants up close. In Ngorongoro Crater, we saw lions, zebras and flamingos in a beautiful natural setting. Serengeti was the highlight, with endless plains, wildlife and peaceful sunsets. After the safari, we relaxed in Zanzibar with white sandy beaches, clear waters and fresh seafood. The whole journey was smooth, memorable and well organized, and we highly recommend reaching out to Elisha for advice and planning. ...more

We took part in a 6-day Best of Tanzania Safari with some friends, where the trip was planned as Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Serengeti → Ngorongoro. The best part of this group safari was getting to know some new travelers. Every night we used to sit in the lodge and talk, and during the day we used to enjoy seeing the wild animals of the jungle together. The Seven Wonders Safaris team arranged everything beautifully for us. The guide's animal spotting skills were excellent, and he shared great information for each location. The sight of lions hunting in the Serengeti and the natural beauty of Ngorongoro are etched in our minds. This is a truly unique tour for those who are looking for an affordable yet enriching safari experience in a friendly, social environment. ...more

Reliable, exciting, just perfect! We visited 4 parks (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Manyara) in 4 days with Kilimanjaro Adventure Safari Club. I am not particularly an animal fan and I enjoyed it thoroughly, despite the long distances that we covered with the 4wd vehicles. So we travelled as a group of 13 people (3 families with kids age 7-12) and took 2 vehicles for the safari. A huge thank you to Gasper and Denis who were our guides for the 4 days and we learned a lot from them! They are real experts on every aspect of the wildlife, geography, they speak excellent English, are super reliable, patient and have eagle eyes to spot the rarest animals while driving! They had no problem to adjust to the unexpected change in our travel plan on the last day of our trip. They served us a decent lunch every day and we had more than enough cold water in the vehicles. We really had a lot of fun with them! The booking process itself was smooth, Vincent was always responsive and clear ...more
